Tips to Thriving in Remote Work, Right Here in Sunny SA

Let’s be honest. Nobody misses sitting in N1 traffic or spending half their salary on petrol. Working remotely for an international company while based in SA is the ultimate cheat code. You earn in stronger currencies, Pounds, Euros, or Dollars, but get to keep living (and spending) in the best country in the world.

But how do you actually get your foot in the door? You don't need to be a coding genius, but you do need a solid strategy. Here is how you set yourself up to land that global role.

1. The Time Zone Card We have a massive unfair advantage over a lot of the world: our time zone. We align almost perfectly with the UK and Europe. That means you can work for a company in London or Berlin without having to take 3 AM Zoom calls. When you're interviewing, make sure you highlight this. European agencies love hiring South Africans because we can collaborate in real-time, and we have a global reputation for just getting the job done.

2. Learn to Speak "Agency" When you start looking at international job specs, it can feel like they're speaking another language. Async work? Agile sprints? KPI dashboards? It can be incredibly intimidating if you've never worked in a global tech or marketing environment before.

You need to talk the talk to pass the interview. That’s exactly why we just dropped the Agency Terminology Guide into the user dashboard for our students. It’s basically a cheat sheet for all the jargon you'll hear when applying overseas. Learn it, and drop those terms naturally in your next interview.

3. Bulletproof Your Uptime One of the expectations almost any international employer has for a remote worker is reliable internet.

You can't be a reliable remote worker if you're dropping off meetings. Bulletproof your workspace. Get a mini-UPS for your router, make sure your fibre connection is stable, and always keep an LTE dongle or mobile hotspot loaded with data as a fail-safe. If you can guarantee you'll be online when you say you will, you've already won half the battle.

4. Get the Right Skills (Without Paying a Fortune) You don't need a four-year university degree to land a remote gig. Global employers care way more about what you can actually do than what your paperwork says.
